In Memory of
Jean Birkenstein Washington

Robin Washington has produced documentaries about instances of racism and segregation in U.S. history. One idea he had in the late 1990s was to make a film, called "Mexico," about his parents' 1955 roadtrip from Chicago to Mexico and the return trip. It was intended to be a light comedy about how a black man, Jewish woman, and their Black Jewish son (Glen, who was 2 years old at the time) came face to face with, yet managed to escape, the racism and segregation in the southwestern United States during the 1950s. To the left is the mock movie poster Erin designed for it, using cut-outs of Jean and Atlee.
